Welcome to Montrose Maternity Unit:
We are a midwife led birthing unit, providing a friendly and nuturing environment for women and their families.
The team comprises of 14 midwives and a health care assistant and provides 24 hour care for antenatal, labouring and postnatal women. The midwives are fervent believers in normal labour and birth and facilitate this natural process using evidence-based care in a highly skilled and sensitive manner. Together we share a vision of what maternity care must acheive and we adhere to a shared philosophy. This was recognised when the team won the RCM promotion of normality award in 2005 and were named the British Journal of Midwifery team of the year in 2006.
We have a birthing pool, which was installed in October 2004, and the team have become specialist providers of waterbirth. The water birth rate is currently 70 per cent. Midwives from Montrose are regularly invited to host workshops with midwives from other areas, to share
their knowledge and experience of waterbirth. The women of Montrose and surrounding area have embraced fully the idea of birthing and labouring in water and many women from outwith our geographical catchment area are seeking out Montrose as a quiet haven of safe normality in which to birth their babies.
