Dundee Birth Choices group

The first meeting of the Dundee Birth Choices group in June is to concentrate on waterbirth.

The group is open to all pregnant women and their families, with the aim of providing them with all the information they require regarding choices in pregnancy and birth. Birth Choices started in Glasgow as the brainchild of a woman who had used local maternity services and an independent midwife. Third year student midwife Paula Ringsell is kick-starting the Dundee group and says it will be "a forum for women to discuss issues around pregnancy and childbirth. The hope is that women will access information which will empower them to make real informed choices regarding their care."

Paula is being supported by fellow midwifery student Lucy Moir and Angus maternity user representative Karen Law, who is also a doula. The monthly meetings lasting two hours will cover topics such as birth plans and normal birth. Waterbirth will be discussed at the first meeting with the help of Montrose midwife Clare Winter.  This is particularly timely as waterbirth is proving very popular in Montrose, Arbroath and Perth and will be introduced in Dundee once the new Community Maternity Unit within Ninewells is completed.

Anyone who would like to attend Dundee Birth Choices should come along on Wednesday 25th June to 31 Hawkhill (above Sally's), Dundee from 7-9pm. The meeting is free of charge and informal.
