The Courier reports today that the process of building a new maternity unit in Montrose is "set to take a major step forward".
It quotes the NHS Tayside chairman Sandy Watson responding to a request for an update on progress from concerned Angus MSP Andrew Welsh. Mr Watson confirmed that, "This development remains a priority for NHS Tayside and funding for the scheme is allocated in the capital plan for 2009/10." He went on to explain the work to date of the project group which includes agreeing an accommodation schedule (the number, purpose and size of rooms). Potential site options are under discussion and the project manager "will complete the initial agreement at the next group meeting on May 27."
Mr Watson is also quoted as saying, "Whilst I recognise that progress at this stage can appear to be slow, it is our experience that time taken at this point to clarify information with staff and users significantly increases the success of the project in the long term. Given that funding is not scheduled to become available until April 2009 I am assured that the project is on target to deliver within the timeframe agreed."
The project was first planned for 2004 but has repeatedly stalled. The project team includes midwives from Montrose and three user representatives.
