International interest in Montrose

Delegates in Scotland for the International Confederation of Midwives Congress in Glasgow took the opportunity to visit Montrose Community Maternity Unit.

The visits started last week with two midwives from Melbourne, Nicola Dutton and Pene Watson, who had heard of the unit's reputation as a centre of excellence for community maternity care and waterbirth. The Courier reported Nicola as saying, "Stand-alone midwifery units are not common in Australia and having birthing pools is not encouraged. We wanted to meet like minded people who support normal, non-interventionist births."

Two of the Montrose midwives, Phyllis Winters and Iona Duckett, went to GMidwives attending ICM 2008 visit Montroselasgow to talk about 'The Little Unit that Could'. Their presentation included video and audio footage of women describing what makes Montrose exceptional. The session proved so popular that some delegates couldn't get in. Four of them decided to visit the unit where they were treated to a special viewing of the presentation. The picture shows Bernice Hand (Australia), Dianne Lyon (Australia), Adelina Cuallado (Spain) and Liliano Prevedello (London) watching the videos.
